You
take the car with the driver for a fixed sum to include Insurance etc., for a
fixed rate per day and buy you own fuel. When you need fuel, just put it in and
pay the Pump attendant in cash. Always remember to ask for a receipt if you
need accountability, work with your driver. Usually, it’s an added hassle to
pay at each fuel up but at least you will need to know how much fuel you will
have used rather than an overall estimate the operator will have come up with
at the start of the trip. Usually, fuel consumption must vary because you may
decide to just take it easy a day or two and do no traveling. However, you
should note that many tour/car hiring operators are that flexible.

Self driving
tips & tricks in Uganda
You should note that all rest
assured that all the primary roads radiating out of Kampala to all the four
corners of Uganda will always bring you comfortably to your safari destination.
The road conditions are good for African standards and are ever improving. The road from Fort Portal via Hoima to
Masindi, from Masindi to Murchison Falls Park and north beyond Gulu towards
Kidepo National Park are unsurfaced. This will greatly reduce the travel speed,
and driving a Land cruiser is more comfortable. The condition of these roads
and some minor B-roads (around Bwindi National Park, the gorilla tracking area)
tend to be variable from one season to the next, and are most difficult during
the rainy season. Our company has explored Uganda by road for many years
and have found that the experience is rewarding and safe as long as the
following precautions are followed with keen interest;
-
You should drive at or below the speed limit (100 km/h on the
highway, though we would advise 80 km/h; and 50 km/h in urban areas).
-
You should beware of unmarked speed bumps, which are plentiful
in many parts of the country, especially at the entrance to towns.
-
You should drive defensively and you should avoid driving at
night. Usually the potholes are difficult to see.
-
Always carry some cash, water and a charged mobile phone to
handle any situation. Keep in mind that a flat tyre can happen easily! It is
part of the adventure and can be fixed quickly at almost any service station.
-
You will discover soon enough that traffic in Uganda drives
on the left side of the road.
