This year that is 2017, a Gorilla permit goes for US
$ 600. This permit has to be purchased in advance and should be bearing the
family or group you should trek that is the gorilla group or family is always
indicated on the gorilla permit. The activity is carried out in Bwindi National
Park and Mgahinga National Park. However, due to the discrepancy of gorillas in
Mgahinga, the majority of the permits which are sold are from Bwindi
Impenetrable National park. It has been registered that on a single day, almost
seventy two (72) people do travel to Bwindi Impenetrable National park
primarily to see the endangered mountain gorillas in Bwindi impenetrable
National park. Only eight (8) people are allowed to see each habituated gorilla
family. When you are travelling to Bwindi, you are highly advised to book a
gorilla permit with a prominent company and also put in consideration that you
should choose a family group which is near your planned accommodation. Travelling to Bwindi by road is very tricky
therefore, you should put in consideration that the route going to Bwindi is
very tricky and this based on the fact that Bwindi is located in a remote area.
Within the park, there are safari guides who have been well trained to help and
guide you. These ones will direct you
through the wilderness as you are searching these endangered mountain gorillas.
The good news about mountain gorillas population in Uganda and
Rwanda
In addition to the gorilla
trekking experience, there has been evidence that the mountain gorilla
population in Uganda and the Republic of Rwanda has continued to increase. This
been regardless of the global concerns which have been scaring that the
primates may very soon become extinct from the wilderness. There has been
reported cases of increase in number of these great apes in the afro- montane
forests of South Western Uganda, Northwest Uganda and Eastern Democratic
Republic of Congo.
How the
mountain gorillas live
The mountain gorillas do
live the wilderness. In Uganda, they are found in the national parks of Bwindi
Impenetrable and Mghahinga gorilla national park. Both parks are found in south
western Uganda. These great apes do live in groups of about 25 to 35 members
and usually the Silver back which is the male gorilla leads the group. It is
usually accompanied by several females
and young ones. At birth a young one weighs an average of about 2.5 kilograms
and this is half of the weight of the human baby though this develops twice fast.
Within a period of forty (40) weeks, it can walk and reach 3 years until it
slowly becomes independent. At the age six (6) years there are about 1.20 meter
tall weighing almost seventy (70) kilograms. It matures and continue gaining
sustainable weight for the next four (4) years.
The
reproduction process of the mountain gorillas in Uganda
During reproduction, the
mountain gorillas do reproduce slowly just as human beings. This is one of the
reason as to why the world population does not increase rapidly as compared to
other primates. The gestation period of the mountain gorillas is about 8.5
months, with the gorilla mothers giving birth to a baby once in every four (4)
years. It has been noted that in most of
the cases, 30 percent does not survive their first year because they are
attacked by diseases and accidents and other die because of their father dies
and another silver back takes over of this new male and often kills the babies
of his predecessor.
