What you need to know for a successful self drive in Uganda

In order for you to have a successful car drive within Uganda, you should book and rent the car in advance. This is the very first step you need to do most especially when you are travelling during the high seasons. Some of the highest seasons are Christmas and Easter seasons. After you have booked your car in advance for a self drive, it will allow you choose the right car for yourself drive. When booking the car, it should entail; places you want to go, the number of days you are going to spend on a holiday, and the number of people you are travelling with. Within Ugandan cities, you may not need a 4X4 wheel drive. However, if you are travelling up country, you will need 4X4 wheel drive car. This type of car is very strong and will avail you comfort while visiting the National Parks within the country.
Also, for a successful car drive you should avoid driving at night. In most cases, this will be a foreign country and thus you should not risk your precious life. One way of avoiding this is by not driving at night. Night drives can only be done in case you are being transferred to the airport. The most highways in Uganda do not have street lights and thus, it is very easy to miss a lodge sign post when you are driving. During a time, when you get some emergency in the middle of nowhere at night, then getting assistance may be very difficult. At the first time you receive the car from the rental agency, you should check for wheel spanner, jack, and validity of insurance including the status of the tires.
During the self drive, you should mark the road signs. The country has got road signs on all the roads and you are advised not to neglect them. You should drive under the stipulated driving speed. Note that over speeding is an offence and is highly penalized. This in most cases delays you and you might end up missing your next destination within the specified time. Usually, the speed limit on the major highways is 80-100 km per hour, 30-50 Km in major towns and trading centers, 40-50 kms per hour in National parks,40-60 km per hour on murram roads. You should switch on the lights when you are driving on the dusty roads more so when it is raining. Remember, off track driving within the country most especially within the national park is not allowed and will always be penalized.
