The staff of Dian Fossey Gorilla
Fund were greatly concerned about the disappearance of the dominant silver back
called Cantsbee. This dominant silver back left the group with two mothers and
their infants which currently defend their selves without the main silverback; Cantsbee. Each mountain gorilla
have a male gorilla group called silverback which leads the group. This silver
back looks at the gorilla group, protects the gorilla family. Of course the
gorilla group is composed of females and young ones. Leading the disappearance
of the dominant silverback in that group called Cantsbee; he left two females
and two infants. Cantsbee disappeared after the long period of illness and this
is the reason why the other members in the group isolated from him. Following
his final disappearance, the other gorilla members became too distressed. The two
members which were left became to distressed to the point that they started
making hooting and vocalizations. They also started walking a lot and this has
scared many people since each of these mothers have got an infant which is just
over one year old. Trackers have been assigned to follow these two mothers and
two infants back to their original family.
Presently,
gorilla families are completely depending on their mothers and yet the silver
back called cantsbee before his disappearance used to take care of them.
Remember, these infants will not start weaning until they are about 3-4 years
old, this therefore means that these mothers are very busy carrying and caring
for these infants without the presence the dominant silverback. The mothers
have to gather enough food to feed themselves and produce energy and milk which
is needed during this time. AT this time, the infant gorillas are now
susceptible to most injuries which include fatal ones which may be inflicted by
unrelated males coming from the outside group. It is very unfortunate since the
two mothers have now run into the group of buffaloes within the forest since
they have no silverback who is supposed to lead the gorilla group.
To raise these infants, it is not very
easy. It is quite a hard task even though the circumstances are very good and
favorable for gorilla tracking. The mortality becomes very high since a fourth
of all infants do die before their birthday. They also get serious injuries
from outside males. It is good that Dian Fossey in 1967 formed the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund
and the research center called the Karisoke Research Center. Cantbee disappearance at
the age of thirty eight (38) years old. By the time of his death, he had passed
the life expectance for a mountain gorilla.
Since there is the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, these gorillas will be catered for.
Even at the birth of Cantsbee, it was first
seen by Dian Fossey and for a long time, this silverback had been observed
during its lifespan by the successor of Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. This mountain
gorilla broke a lot of records during his life span. These included leading the
largest group of the gorillas which have ever been observed and remaining
dominant for the longest reign ever recorded. Silverback Cantsbee was most
known for his unique personality and behaviors. He had very strong
relationships with other mountain gorillas and he was given respect by other
mountain gorillas. The respect given was in form of leadership. Luck enough,
the genes and influence of Cantbee will be felt for quite a long period of
time. Cantsbee will be missed for the rest of his life though he left two off
springs with two mothers.
